Chapter Ten

"Bed rest?" I echoed. "But — I can't stay in bed. That's impossible."

"You need to stay off your feet, possibly until this baby arrives," the physician answered. "We managed to stop the contractions during early labor, but you don't want to have a repeated episode. You need rest, and as little activity as possible."

Didn't they know that I was a mother with a full-time job to boot? Not to mention two weddings in motion and a summer fair trying to avoid trapeze accidents and inappropriately-costumed performers.

"How am I going to manage?" I said. "Isn't there something else you can do?" Helplessly, I tried to imagine that some miracle drug would be suggested, a pill that would let me get on with my life and finish all those to-do list items before I had a newborn in my arms.

"I'm afraid not," he said. "I'm going to keep you here overnight for observation, then, tomorrow, you can go home. It would be best if you laid down as soon as possible, and kept off your feet unless strictly necessary."

He adjusted the I.V. in my arm, then stepped behind the panel to speak with one of the nurses. I lay back helplessly, staring at the ceiling. Four weeks — it wasn't feasible, that I could stay in bed that long. Wasn't there a reprieve that could be offered if I was good for a week? If there were no more pains?

The panel moved, and it wasn't Amanda coming through, but Matt. I felt a flood of relief as I reached for his hand, feeling him squeeze mine tightly. Those dark eyes of his were filled to the brim with concern.

"Steady, my love," he said, softly. "It's going to be fine." His other hand folded around mine, too.

Amanda drove me to Cliffs House after a night of mostly-anxious sleep. Under the blankets in the Cliffs House guest room that had once been my private quarters years ago, I noticed the slight rearrangement of furniture to accommodate my laptop computer, and the addition of a vase of fresh flowers, along with a 'thinking of you' card from both the part-time maids who worked at the manor house.

"I can't stay here, Amanda," I protested, as she tucked the duvet around me.

"You can't very well stay at home, can you?" she said. "You'd be out of bed every other tick of the clock to break up a sibling squabble or see what the strange smell is coming from the kitchen. This is the only sensible plan until the doctor says otherwise. Besides, you'll be much more comfortable here, and have plenty of privacy so you can have plenty of rest. Mrs. Norris and I will pop in regularly to be sure of it."

"But you know how much I have on my plate right now," I answered, exasperated. "What about work? What about the fair? Joel's social worker touches base weekly — Sylvia is supposed to have her doctor's appointment about her tonsils. I didn't even turn off my coffeemaker's automatic timer.
